Why would pharmaceutical companies use glycerin in toothpaste, acne ointment, ear drops and eye drops?

Glycerin, is sweet, attracts water, and is part of fatty acids. If you add water and bacteria or yeasts, wouldn't those grow? With water, doesn't it create a perfect medium for stuff to grow?Does it ferment when water and yeasts are added? Why would pharmaceutical companies use glycerin in toothpaste, acne ointment, ear drops and eye drops? I understand it helps to keep product moist, acts as a preservative, keeps other ingredients suspended etc. That's fine inside a sterile package, but when you add it to germy moist pimples or a warm damp ear infection wouldn't it perpetuate the flora? They use it in candy, Why would I want to put it on pimples? Has anyone done this for an experiment?

Companies use glyercine as it is cheap and safe to use.
